New uniforms, helmet designs and throwback jerseys are on their way to the gridiron this season as NFL teams reimagine the looks of eras past and take advantage of a year-old league rule that allows teams to wear multiple helmets in one season for the first time in a decade.
Key Facts
The NFL relaxed its tight helmet rules last year and teams wasted no time showing off their creative designs—13 teams unveiled alternate or throwback helmets last year, and the trend isn't slowing down.
One team has revamped all of their uniforms for the 2023-24 season, another seven teams so far this year have revealed throwback jersey looks with matching new helmets—described by Bleacher Report as ranging "from awful looks that should have been left forgotten to awesome looks paying homage to their teams' earlier years"—and another three announced new helmet designs.
Throwback jerseys, the most common way a team mixes up its look, were first popularized by the MLB and then started appearing in college football games, the NHL and the NBA—the first NFL throwbacks were worn on-field in 1994, honoring the league’s 75th anniversary.
A Look At The Nfl’s Fresh New Uniforms
Arizona Cardinals—The Cardinals are the only team that has unveiled a complete uniform overhaul for the 2023 season—showing off simplified home, road and alternate looks in red, black and white. It's the first new uniform set for the Cardinals since 2005—and one long called for by fans. Owner Michael Bidwill said the team was going for a "really clean look."
Indianapolis Colts—The most controversial new uniform title this season is handedly owned by the Colts. SB Nation called the "Indiana Nights" alternate uniforms "so bad they defy words," but some fans took to X, formerly called Twitter, in support of the unique look. The team will wear black helmets for the first time in franchise history in Week 7, paired with a twist on their usual jersey and pants with a heather pattern—the first of their kind in the NFL.
Tennessee Titans—The Tennessee Titans are paying homage to the franchise's deep history with a throwback jersey honoring the Houston Oilers. The Oilers played in Texas for 36 years before the move to Nashville, then were the Tennessee Oilers for two years before the Titans debuted in 1999. The “Columbia blue” jerseys feature red and white on the numbers, names and sleeves, and "Luv Ya Blue" will be printed on the back neckline.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers—Orange, red and white uniforms have returned to the Bucs for the first time since they rocked the iconic look in the 1970s. The orange jerseys will be worn with white pants, orange socks and white helmets with the "Bucco Bruce" logo. The team will wear a new iteration of the Creamsicle uniforms in Week 6 against the Lions.
New York Jets—The "New York Sack Exchange" era—when defensive linemen Mark Gastineau, Joe Klecko, Marty Lyons and Abdul Salaam played together in the 1980s—is the inspiration for the "Legacy White" throwback uniforms the Jets will wear twice this season–including Week 1 against Buffalo. The jerseys have a Sack Exchange logo on the helmet and, when the team wears the jerseys, MetLife Stadium will also have the logo on the 50-yard line.
Seattle Seahawks—The Seahawks 90s throwback to royal blue jerseys, silver striped pants and silver helmets will be worn in week 8 against the Browns. The jerseys are reminiscent of what Sports Illustrated called an "iconic" era for the Seattle Seahawks that solidified “the team's presence in the city."
Minnesota Vikings—This year's "Vikings Classic”' throwback jerseys will debut against Tampa Bay next month and are inspired by the 1960s and 70s. The jerseys aren't a huge departure from the team's usual look, but do include a deeper purple, retro sleeve stripes and larger, gold-trimmed numbers.
Philadelphia Eagles—In a nod to the 1990s, the Eagles will rock Kelly green throwback uniforms in Week 7 and Week 12. Eagles Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie said conversations about bringing back a bright-green alternative uniform date back to 2012, and the new look includes a color custom-made for the team by Nike in a fabric made out of recycled materials.
Tangent
Three other teams will unveil new helmet designs this season. The Denver Broncos will have white helmets this year in a nod to "Colorado's snow capped mountains" and the Cleveland Browns will wear white helmets for the first time since 1951 in Week 2, Week 6 and Week 17. The Detroit Lions will wear new blue alternate helmets with their all-gray uniforms.
